The 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant was awarded to the School District of Lee County in 2018 and the grant, totaling over $230, 000 yearly for the next 3 years, is from Title IV federal funding.
The School District of Lee County supports three 21st Century Community Learning Centers with this funding that were selected based on school grade and school improvement needs. The programs are held during non-school hours in order to extend learning and improve achievement in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science (STEM), Arts , and the Health and Well-being of participating eligible students.
These centers are located at one elementary school serving grades 2 through 5, Manatee Elementary, and one middle school, Fort Myers Middle Academy serving grades 6 through 8. Each program serves students who have been identified for additional academic support and enrichment. Each program has certified teachers, uses project-based lessons and coordinates with regular school day teachers for learning continuity and to increase student academic achievement.
Family members of students served by the programs are required to participate in a series of workshops to learn how best to support students in their academic development. These workshops are offered every other month throughout the school year.
The after school programs meet daily Monday through Thursday each day that school is in session. Students selected for the program are expected to attend on a daily basis. A designated, certified Teacher Leader and Teacher work in tandem to support the project-based lessons in a rotation schedule that includes English Language Arts/Art and Math, Science/STEM. Students also participate in the research-based Health and Physical Education SPARK program. Student achievement is monitored through the use of pre and post testing. quarterly grades and rubrics. Students receive both snack and supper and homework assistance from staff during the after school time. Transportation is provided.
The site safety is facilitated by a site manager who remains on site after school to handle student issues, facility management and bus transportation. The program adheres to the same student code of conduct and parent guidelines that are used during the school day at each site.
The program is supported by the school district through a multi-site coordinator at the district office who provides technical and programmatic assistance during the school year. The Florida Department of Education monitors the program yearly to ensure compliance with grant guidelines and use of funding.
